ZIMRA import duty on parcels: what you may pay

Duty is the part of importing that surprises people most. This guide explains in plain terms how customs works for parcels, what Liyanda’s fee covers, and how to avoid delays. It is general information, not a duty quote.

The short version

  • Goods imported into Zimbabwe can attract customs duty and VAT, set by ZIMRA.
  • How much depends on what the item is, its declared value and whether it is for personal or commercial use.
  • Our shipping fee includes clearing and handling. Duty on the item’s value, where it applies, is separate.
  • We advise you on likely duty when you send us your item list, before the shipment leaves the USA.

What affects the duty

  • Item type: electronics, clothing, cosmetics and car parts are treated differently.
  • Value: duty is based on the value of the goods, and shipping cost can be part of that value.
  • Quantity: several identical items can be treated as commercial rather than personal.
  • Documents: invoices that match the goods help clearance go smoothly.

Rates and rebates change. Always confirm current figures with ZIMRA, or ask us, before you rely on a number you saw online.

How to avoid delays at the airport

  1. 1Keep your order invoice. Send it to us if we ask.
  2. 2List everything in your parcel accurately.
  3. 3Do not ship prohibited items. Perfumes need special packaging; adult toys, drones, flammable liquids, aerosols, alcohol and firearms are not accepted.
  4. 4Collect promptly once we tell you the parcel has cleared.

Working with ZIMRA and a clearing agent

We work closely with ZIMRA, the airlines, our US partners and our clearing agent, so documentation and clearance are handled for you as part of the service.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay import duty on items shipped to Zimbabwe?

It depends on the item and its value. ZIMRA customs duty may apply. Our fee includes clearing and handling; any duty on the item value is separate and we advise you on it when you send your list.

Is VAT charged on parcels?

VAT can apply on imported goods. Confirm the current position with ZIMRA, or ask us for guidance on your specific items.

What happens if I do not pay duty?

Parcels are held at the port of entry until duty and other charges are cleared. Prompt collection and accurate paperwork avoid storage delays.
